Smokemare frowned at her, "Hmmm, you DO have a point... Although, from what Nick tells me, killing you will be the last thing on their minds. I wonder if you could be captured ? If so then you probably shouldn't... *sigh* to be honest I already asked him the question - he says he has no idea where they'd be taken anyway!"

He tried to look sympathetically at her, it was tense moment and these were difficult times. Still, at least he seemed to slowly be getting his head together.

Sable shrugged and said "It's hard to capture someone who's strapped and can't be hurt, you know? Give me a couple of grenades or plastic explosives, and nobody will get close to me." She turned her attention back to Nick, "So, you can't find where they are, then? So.. tell me who does know, and I'll go find out."

Nick sighed at both of them, was there a way to rescue Kyle? Nick wasn't sure, Jessica would be nearby him though. Jessica deserved to be rescued after what he put her through...actually both of them did. Kyle risked his life to buy them time...Nick knew it was his own fault. And now as the girl he had originally wanted to join his resistance stood before him ready to die on his whim he wondered if it was worth the trade off. His Morality for an aeir to his resistance.

"I have an idea." Nick said rising from his chair. "Mr...Smoke, I need you to infiltrate the DMA field HQ. I will give you the details tonight before you embark. While you are inside the HQ you will hack into their computer network using a specialized arithmetic our tech specialist will give you. Once you're inside their network find the DMA holding facility and radio Sable with the coordinates. Sable you will be waiting outside the city with a small strike team. When you get the coordinates, you'll hit the Holding facility. Fair enough?"

St. Micheal's Medical Center, Mutant Safehouse

Sable smacked one of her fists into the opposing palm and said, "Yeah, that sounds good. But I hope you plan on arming me... they don't exactly hand out 'nines in PE, you know."

*******

Serenity did not sleep, instead she simply lay in the bed, still, with her eyes shut, to pacify Sable. It had taken time for her to come to grips with what had happened, and the added trauma of having been involved in an attack on the safehouse, and healing Simon, had all just added to her dissociation.

Once Sable was gone, she allowed herself to weep. When she had connected to Simon, she had felt his pain, had known every degrading moment that had led to his alcoholism, his separation from mankind, his burden of carrying that vile thing for so many years. She wept for him.

Upon connecting to Susan, she had not been granted the total access she usually enjoyed, but sensed that the girl had much emotional pain. Even now, Serenity could feel Susan's bright power burning brightly, distantly. She focused her attention on it, and performed an experiment.

She nudged Susan's bright orb of power, and it flared brightly for a moment. Then she did more than nudge it... she embraced it and opened the floodgates of her heart to it. The bright light became a nova of power, engulfing her.

In the van, as Sable had held her close, she could feel Sable's concern for the white haired one, Susan's brother. Now, as she fed Susan's powers, she asked one question, hoping that Susan would be able to hear her through her enhanced power. "Where? Where is he? I can.... help...."

The strain of sustaining Susan's heightened state caused her to tremble as the golden light appeared in her eyes, and a trickle of blood crept from her nose.

Chase walked into the hospital as Shynira was leaving.

"Leaving ussss already prrrreety little one?"

"Yeah, I need to get some things done. Tell Nick I'll try to come back if I can." Shynira waved at Chase and started towards the street as she made a phone call.

Chase nodded and walked into the hospital, with a hawk in her arms, and Sharla appeared out of what seemed to be nowhere, and walked in with her. Chase walked into Nicks office, and sat down in one of the chairs, not even paying attention to whether it effected Sable or Smokemare. She sat down and cradled the hawk like an infant, listening to what was going on.

Outside the hospital

"Hey, Jay. Could you pick me up outside of St. Micheal's Medical Center please?"

"Yeah, I know. I'm out a little late. Has Dad asked about me from you yet?"

"Okay, then I'm fine. Come and get me please." Shynira shut off her phone and looked at the message she recieved from Shaina. It read "R U on your way?" She smiled and replied. "Yeah, Jay's going to pick me up. Cya soon doll."

After about thirty minutes a limo came to hault in front of Shynira. "You didn't have to bring the limo Jay." Jay smiled at her.

"It's the only vehicle your father wouldn't miss when he walks outside. He knows I take it to get breakfast some times."

"Thanks Jay, can we swing by the house, let me change, and get me and Shaina to school?"

"As you wish Miss Shayla." Jay smiled as he opened the door for her. She ducked into the limo and rode off toward her house.

Shaina got the text and started watching out the window for Shy to pull up. She was nervous about how Shy would react to her, if she told and showed her what was going on. But decided to say something anyway. She felt her pulse racing as she got more and more nervous. Finally the Limo parked up at the door, and Shynira got out and walked into the house.

The rest of the house was already starting to get up, and their father had already gone to work. Shy walked up the stairs, and ran almost directly into Shaina as she ran out the door.

"Hey, watch it sweety. Don't wanna run me down." As Shy spoke Shaina grabbed her arm and started to pull her into her room. "What's the hurry?"

"I need to show you something." Shaina yanked her into the room. "Sit on my bed."

Shynira smiled and looked at her. "You're acting like you are a little kid hun. What's going on?"

"I have something I want to show you, but only you. You have to SWEAR that you won't tell anyone else what I'm about to show you."

"Okay, Okay... I swear... it stay's between us."

Shaina sighed a somewhat release and walked over to the bed. "Watch this." Shaina put her hand on the bed, and it started to go into the bed. Shynira let out a bit of a squeal, and pulled her hand out of the bed.

"What in the world is that?" Shynira started touching the part of the bed that she had just touched. Then it hit her, maybe I'm not the only unique one in the family. Shy grabbed her hand and pulled her over to her. "How long has this been going on?"

"Months from what I can tell. It started while I was sleeping. All those times I woke up under the bed, seems that I've been actually falling through the bed."

Shynira grabbed ahold of her and hugged her tight. "You don't know how happy that makes me."

"What do you mean?" Shaina asked as she now sat with a very questioning look on her face. She was expecting complete astonishment, instead it seemed as if she just told her that she had graduated from college 7 years early.

"Wel, I thought I was alone in this family, but you have proven that I'm not alone at all." Shynira hugged her again and then let her go and stood to her feet. "You see, for the past several years I've been experiencing something that makes me different like you." Shynira made her hand disapear and then her arms and grabbed Shaina again, but this time while her arms were invisible. "We'll have to talk more about this later. For now, we need to get to school." Shy looked at her nails. "Hot pink? Where'd you get that nail polish?"

"I don't remember ever doing it to myself. Dad said maybe you were experimenting on me again." Shaina shrugged.

"Nah, I only do that when you are awake, and you know it. Let's get that off of you, it doesn't quite match your complexion" Shy took out some nail polish remove and put it on them. "Odd, this isn't comming off. We'll have to forget about it til later. Remember not to do anything abnormal at school. NO ONE should ever know about this, except me and you. Okay?"

"Yeah, I'll hide it."

Smokemare rubbed his chin thoughtfully, and paused for a long time before answering, "Yeah, I suppose I can try and do that... I have to warn you though I'm not a whizz with computers - if it's tricky I could get unstuck."

He was starting to feel like a drink, and a smoke. Not the usual striking urge to immedietly get one... More of a longing for the familiarity of an old friend. He bit his lip and waited though, it seemed rude to start drinking and smoking in the presence of Nick and Sable.

Conan watched Shynara leave, then turned to Felicity, "Nice girl..."

She rolled her eyes at him, "Little 'young' for you don't you think?"

He looked hurt at this, "Hey, I wasn't thinking, 'like that', I just meant she seems nice. Anyway what are you going to do now?"

The sun was now cascading through the windows, the blinds and curtains preventing the full effect. The new day had clearly started, this presented awkward questions about 'what to do with it'.

Flick shrugged, "I was going to Art College, I dunno though - I suppose they might look for me there first - if they are inclined to re-capture me."

Conan nodded solemnly, "True... I was doing an apprenticeship at a motor repair garage... Again, if some secret organisation is desperate to capture me then... That might not be a good thing to do..."

She smiled and yawned softly, "Hmmm, tell you what lets ask Nick what he thinks we should do?"

Conan nodded and they both climbed to their feet and walked into the office. Inside, Sable, Smoke, Nick and a stranger were already standing in the office. Conan looked around, "Jesus... It's getting crowded in here - you need more chairs dude."

Felicity stepped forwards, "Erm, Nick... Can I call you Nick? We're wondering what we should do today. I don't think we explained last night - we were both captured and escaped together - do you think it's safe to go back to what we were doing before we were captured? I was at Art College, he was doing and apprenticeship..."

Chase looked up at the two who just walked in, hearing their words.

"Yessss... go back to what you were doing beforrrrre...." Chase somewhat laughed as she said it, as she pet the hawk. "I'm surrrre they wouldn't look forrrr you where they found you."

Chase looked over the girl. "And you. They would love to get their hands on you. I can even sense the powerrr you hold." Chase stood from her chair and approached Felocity and Conan. "You both sssseeem to be fairrrly strong. I wonderrr how it was they caught you to begin with."

Nick looked up at Chase. "That's enough Chase, leave them be."

"mmmmmkay Nick, I'm going to go take care of my new pet. Take good care of yourrrss..."

Chase walked out of the room and shut the door as she made her way towards the kitchen with the hawk wrapped up in the blanket.

"There therrre my darling. I'll get you something to eat."

Jay dropped off both the girls at the door of the highschool. Shaina got out first, then Shy followed.

"Thanks Jay. Will you be picking us up?"

"As far as I know Miss Shayla." Jay smiled as he saw her smirk at him.

"Why do you insist on calling me Shayla?"

"Because it's the name I've always known you as. Shynira just doesn't seem to fit."

"Okay Jay, I'll see you after school."

"Bye."

Jay drove off leaving the girls at the doors.

"You know, it's dangerous to challenge him this way."

"I don't care. If they are mutants, I want to know. Despite what he says."

"If you are sure about this, I'll do it." The woman got out of the black van and walked into the school.

"Excuse me Ma'am, can I help you?" The principal of the school stopped her in the hallway.

"I'm a substitute for one of your teachers."

"Ahhh... you must be Mrs. Shawl."

"Actually it's Miss Shawl, but yes that is me."

"You'll be happy with your class, most if not all are good students."

"I'm sure they are, would you mind giving me a tour of the school so I know where I am going. I understand that I'll be staying for a while."

"Of course, I'll show you around."

Felicity turned to Conan, then to Nick, "Jesus... What's her problem then? Was she being sarcastic or something?"

Conan leaned forwards, looking a little peeved, "For the record I didn't even know they were AFTER me! Like I said, they must have hit me with a traquiliser dart or something."

Felicity piped up at this point, "...And my best guess is that they spiked my drink or something. You and your friends are going to have to watch your backs, clearly they were just trying to do too much in one hit tonight. It was only chance really that we escaped - there must be others who aren't so lucky."

Conan rubbed his chin, "Anyway, you must know all this - but seriously, how safe are we to go back to what we were doing before we got nabbed?"

Sable was quickly loosing patience with the whole scene. Nick seemed to have an open door policy regarding his office, which was a good thing, she supposed. She stood up, impatient now to get on the ball with... well, anything. "Look, can I just get strapped, so I can go stand watch over my sister?"

"Shayla Adams?"

"Here!"

"Jason Alan?"

"Here!"

The morning role call was going on as usual, despite the fact that they had a substitute that day.

Shynira looked out the window and into the schools courtyard. The school had a beautiful park like place for all the students to gather at during lunch, if they wanted. They could of course leave the grounds when they were Juniors and Seniors, but not many of them did so anymore. The school had enough funds to keep the best foods in the cafeteria.

"Charlotte Hanson?"

there wasn't a reply.

"Charlotte?" The substitute looked around to see if there were any empty desks. "Anyone know if Charlotte is comming today?"

No one answered, and for Charlotte to be missing was odd. Shynira looked over at the empty desk trying to remember when the last time she saw her was. It had to of been the day before, when she was sitting there seemingly hanging on every word of their teacher. The substitute continued with role call, and was finally finished with the calling of Zachory Washington, probably one of the cutest guy's in the school.

The class went rather well for a substitute, and Shy actually understood everything that was being said, which was unusual when it came to Chemistry.

"This," Miss Shawl turned on the screen which had the computer desktop on it, with a picture in a window. "is a normal molecule. However, when a scientist decided to expose this molecule to radiation it started to mutate into something else. Even though it kept it's original properties, it also took on the properties of the glass around it."

"Miss Shawl?" Shy raised her hand, and Miss Shawl pointed to her. "If the molecule took on the properties of the glass, then exactly what did it become?"

"Good question, and if scientists knew that, then we'd know how to revert it back to the original molecule, but as of now, we don't have that option."

Shynira throught about that. "if scientists knew what it became, then they could revert it back to the original." She never thought about the idea of losing her special gifts, but if it were possible, would she want to give them up.

The class continued on, and Shy learned quite a bit about mutated molecules and normal molecules. She started to wonder if they would fight one another if you put them into the same dish, she laughed at the notion, and started to walk out when the bell rung.

"Miss Adams, would you please stay behind, I'd like to have a word with you."

Shy stopped and returned to the teachers desk. "Yes?"

After all of the class left Miss Shawl looked at her for a second. "You have a very brilliant mind, don't you." She smiled at her. "I just wanted to commit on your question. If we knew for sure what it was, then the scientist who created it would not have had to destroy it. Something more to think about, before you go." Miss Shawl smiled at her and then sat at the desk and started to grade some papers.

"Thanks Miss Shawl" Shy looked over her, and thought that that answer was kind of weird and scary.

"Anytime, Miss Adams."

*** Warning Mature Rated Post: Extreme Gore and Violence ***

Nightmare watched the report on the Green Phantom and Burnouts activities with interest. They'd done well, things were off to a good start.

'Impressive...'

He glanced over to the other sofa where the two were sitting, only to see them crashed out asleep. He smirked at them, stood up, then turned off the television. He could appreciate their tiredness, they'd been up half the night killing police, then watching it on the news...

He chugged the last of his second bottle of whisky down and carefully placed the empty bottle on the floor. With a spring in his step he walzted over to the window and looked out over the city. A new day had dawned, and he was going to be busy, he a lot of people to kill and a limited amount of time to do it in.

Leaving the derelict hotel Nightmare started making his way by foot to the large Fire Station near the centre of town. It was still morning and there weren't many people about. Some of the crews would be sleeping, others playing cards and snooker, waiting for the call...

This time, instead of confronting them he decided to save time and simply wipe them out without a word. As he stepped closer he began to fall into his component particles, quickly forming a thick plume of black, acrid smoke.

As the smoke spreadout he began to seep into the building, corroding every grill and keyhole that he entered as he did. As he spread out the smoke didn't become much thinner, the hapless firemen and auxillary staff noticed it immedietly. Screams of panic were followed by coughs and splutters, then viel gurgling noises as his vile smoke melted their lungs from the inside out. The furniture and walls tarnished and decayed as well, within minutes the building looked like it had been abandoned for years, then sprayed with acid.

As he filled every room, every office, every set of lungs, the screams and coughs grew louder, some tried to grab extinguishers and put him out, but the particles of Nightmare simply bounced around the water and foam particles.

Once the entire population of the building was dead, and the equipment damaged beyond repair he seeped back out and reformed on the street. As he did a cop car screeched to a halt and two uniformed officers leapt out pointing their guns at him, "Freeze! Get down on the floor!"

He simply smiled at them, "No, you get down on the floor... Or don't bother - either way I'm going to kill you." His voice was cool, controlled and measured. As he approached the car one cop was firing wildly, bullets sailing through Nightmare, while the other was in a panic screaming into his radio. Nightmare reached his hand towards the face of the one was on the radio. His hand smoke formed and invaded the mans lungs as he coughed and spluttered, Nightmare stepped closer, then reformed solidly with force, and ripped the mans stomach out of his mouth, leaving him gurgling in agony on the floor, writhing in pain.

The other cop by now had ran out of bullets and threw his pistol at Nightmare in desperation. The revolver flew straight through him. By the time the pistol hit the floor the man was sprinting away, but Nightmare caught up with him in seconds, he formed fully into smoke and invaded the mans lungs and stomach, then formed solidly with force, causing him to explode into a collection of small piles of gore and limbs.

Smiling to himself he reformed and simply carried on walking as if nothing had happened. There was a large Hospital a couple of blocks away... Their survival rates were going to take a nosedive soon he mused...

St. Micheal's Medical Center, Mutant Safehouse

Nick eyed Sable for a long moment before finally nodding and reaching into his desk drawer. From it, he withdrew a small pistol of a kind Sable knew nothing about, which was not unusual as she had never fired a gun in her life. "Skorpion .22 caliber machine pistol, favored by Russian security forces and drug cartels that employ women. It's small, low recoil, and can be set for three round bursts, or full auto." He handed her the pistol and three spare clips, and she cradled these items like they were precious gifts for a moment. Then, she slipped the clips into her pockets and tucked the pistol into her waistband at the small of her back.

"Great, now that I know you're serious, then just give me a yell when you're ready to bust Kyle and Susan out of that place. I'll be in room 327, with my sister." With that, she simply left the office, giving none of the others a second look.

*******

Serenity's nosebleed went from a trickle to a steady flow as she maintained her link to Susan, amplifying the other girl's natural ability. As from a great distance, Serenity could hear Susan's voice, but could not make out what she was saying. Serenity pushed harder, straining herself to her very limits, and was suddenly rewarded with an arial veiw of a plainly marked building in the middle of nowhere. She could see the city, far off to the east, and directly below her was what looked like a state highway, which seemed to pass a quarter mile or so south of the building.

She focued her attention on building, and became aware of several bright lights burning in the building, and she knew immediately that each spot of light was a person of power, held there as Kyle was being.

The strain of the conection, which Serenity realized had been linked from Susan to herself, to a bird that had been flying around the installation, suddenly faltered, and the glow of Serenity's eyes died down. Her eyes fluttered open, and she sat up weakly as the door opened, and Sable stepped in.

The sisters locked eyes for a moment, Sable concerned about her little sister, Serenity still battling her anger at how Sable had hurt daddy. "I know where he is, sis... I've seen it."

Sable's eyes went wide, "Really? Where?"

Serenity shook her head, "I don't know exactly.. .but it's west of the city off an old state highway. I am sure I can find it again, if we get closer."

Sable nodded, and looked back out into the hallway, considering taking this information to Nick. She still didn't fully trust, Nick, though, and he would probably still make them all wait for the 'oppurtune moment'. She turned her head back to Serenity, "Are you okay? Can you travel?"

Serenity nodded, her light brown eyes registering far more exhaustion that her body. "Yes, let's go het him... please." Sable nodded curtly, and the sisters prepared to slip away.

Chase walked into the kitchen and opened the window. After several minutes the Female hawk came down to the sill with a fish in it's mouth. Chase petted the hawk and took the fish. After cutting it up, she fed the male hawk the pieces, and drew it some water.

"There therre.. You are a pretty bird."

Chase looked over at the female who was in the window. Her eyes changed fluidly going from her normal human eyes into the small pupils of the hawk. The hawk took off and started to search the city, looking over everything.

"Shayla!!!!" The girlish scream flowed down the hallway as Shynira walked down. "You didn't call me last night sweety, is everything okay?"

"Yeah, thanks for asking Julie. I've just been kind of lost in thought"

"I know how that can be, my boyfriend broke up with me yesterday, and I called your phone, but it went straight to your voicemail, so I didn't leave a message, but I really wanted to talk to someone so I called Sharon, who told me that she knew he was going to break up with me....."

Shynira could still hear her voice, but wasn't to interested in what she had to say. She caught herself thinking about everything that had happened the night before, and the fact that she hadn't slept all night wasn't helping her keep her focus. She continued to keep pace with Julie who was walking with her now, but her mind was concentrating on her thoughts.

"Are you listening to me?" Julie stopped walking which snapped Shynira out of her thoughts.

"I'm sorry, I've just had so much going on."

"You're thinking of him aren't you?"

"Who?"

"Zachory."

"No, what makes you think that?"

"Well, one you've had a crush on him since 5th grade, when you met him in your class. And two you've been staring directly at him for the past 5 minutes."

Shynira hadn't even realized what she was looking at, she was to lost in her thoughts.

"No, I was honestly lost in my thoughts Julie. I have to get to my class though. I'll see you at lunch. Shaina will be joining us by the way."

"Your little sister?... She's so .. well... you know... "

"She's younger than she should be, I know... But she has good reasons for acting young. I want to help her grow up a bit."

"Well, whatever you want hun. I'll see you after gym then."

After Sable left with her weapon Nick turned to Felicity and conan. "If you two try to return to your normal live they will come for you again...and you won't get so lucky next time. I suggest you join us, as Sable was just saying about a rescue mission. Please go find her and stay with her until I speak with Smoke here."

The two nodded and left. Nick turned to Smokemare. "I know of a forward base the DMA and Military is using as a staging area. I have a spy there that tells me the DMA have finished a biobomb that they are going to bring into the city and use...Needless to say we must stop it. However, I want you to do more than just stop it, I need you to capture it and bring it back here." He paused to let it sink in. "We need the virus to study so we can create a possible vaccine." His skillfully lied. "The bomb is roughly the size of a breifcase and when not armed is totally harmless. That means you'll also need to get the detonation codes, they should be nearby on the lead scientist of commanding officer of the base. Most importantly you must do all this without being detected. If they find out we have the bomb they will no doubt activate it, so until we get the codes so we can change them they must not find out."

Susan collapsed on the floor, and slipped silently into a coma. She knew that Serenity knew where Kyle was though, and soon Serenity and Sable would find him.

_________________________________________________________________

Water splashed over his face, his own power back fired on him... Kyle screamed in pain as his own electricity was rerouted into his body too fast for him to control. As the water dripped off him the electrical torture nullified. Agent Brower, the one who wore the sunglasses when they first met, punched Kyle again in the gut. Kyle coughed up some blood and slowly looked up at him as he cracked his knuckles and circled around Kyle tied to the rubber chair. Agent Larrz walked up behind him and pressed a cigarette to the back of his neck.

Kyle gritted his teeth in pain as the lit cigarette was put out using his flesh as an ashtray. Kyle was a mess, bruises covered his face and more than one cut was present there too. Dried blood and fresh blood alike was around the cuts, his nose, his mouth, and even his ears. His body was crying out in pain and fatigue, he got a few minutes of sleep here or there. Mostly inbetween 'research' sessions. They used a transfusion of some healing mutant's blood to keep Kyle alive and awake enough to continue to feel the pain of the torture sessions and research sessions.

"You dusgust me you know that." Brower said kneeling down next to him. "You're like some kind of leech sucking off of the power around you. you're weak, you use your power as a shield to save yourself and protect your sister."

Kyle's eyes shot straight up at Brower, emotions ran through him...He was afraid, terrified that they would capture his sister...that they would do this to her!

"Thats right freak, we're coming for your cute little sister...I'll have fun, interrogating' her." Brower laughed.

Kyle's head moved far too fast for someone in his condition. His forehead struck Brower's nose with incredible force, he could hear it break clearly. Blood gushed out of the wound and Brower was knocked back off his feet. Kyle felt the energy spike through his body, giving him superhuman strentgh. He stood up, ripping off the rubber coated steel chains with ease.

He screamed in rage at Brower, electricity arching all over his body, his eyes shinning a bright white with sparks dancing in them. "You'll never get near her you Bastard!" Larrz tried to rush Kyle from behind but when he got too close a bolt of electricity flew into his chest and slammed him into the wall behind him. Kyle picked up Brower by his collar, easily lifting the heavier man with his energy induced strength. Electricity flowed into Brower and he screamed out as he lost control of his body and the only thing he felt was pain from every nerve ending in his body.

Kyle flung him into the side wall, Brower broke his neck and died instantly on impact. The entrance to the room opened, a squad of guards came in. Kyle threw up an electromagnetic shield to protect himself but the guards fired shotguns full of rubber pellets. They struck Kyle in his chest, blowing him back into the chair toppling over unconcious. His only hope of freedom was crushed, he would never be able to escape now.

Conan and Felicity wandered out of the office a little dumbfounded. He looked at her quizzically, "What do you suppose we are going to do now?"

She shrugged, "I dunno... This sucks you know, this really sucks!"

"Hmmm, I know what you mean, I kind of had plans for life and I'm getting the impression they're not going to happen now..."

"Not yet anyway, perhaps if... Pah! What are we going to do? I don't think we can go home..."

He walked to a seat along the wall outside the office and sat down, she followed and sat beside him, he spoke first, "God... I need some time for this to sink in..."

Felicity nodded towards Sable storming angrily towards the opposite door, "What about her?"

Conan raised an eyebrow, "What do you mean?"

"Well, she's going on some sort of mission to save 'sparky' isn't she? Perhaps we should help?"

"Can we?"

"Well, we can at least try, even if we only drive the getaway vehicle it's something! It's better than sitting around twiddling our thumbs, besides don't you want to get back at those bastards who are doing this to us? Could you really knowingly leave someone in the situation we were in?"

"No you're right..." He called over to Sable as she reached the opposite door, "Hey, if you want some backup - count us both in! Just say the word when you're ready to go!"

Sable froze in mid-skulk as she was leaving the room Serenity had chosen, turning to look at the two approaching her. They had been in Nick's office, but she didn't know them. "Back up?" She asked at first, wondering if Nick had sent them to stop her, but then she realized that it was just the opposite. "Oh, yeah... alright. I guess more firepower can help. I can't be hurt, and my sister hear can heal people. What's your difference?"

The Docks

Burner tossed his cigarette off the pier and pushed the last of the smoke from his lungs as he slung his pack on. "Don't you worry about a thing, Mr. Marconi, I'll get your 'package' there on time." He said to his companion.

The man, Albert Marconi, was a small time mobster working the cocaine angle in the east side. He was in need of reliable, fast soldiers to deliver for him, and Burner knew he could foot the bill. "Yeah, well, it better be. If you can get there quick enough, we'll talk about you taking over all the routes."

Burner grinned cockily and kick flipped his board into position. "Trust me paisan, call your boys in about five minutes, and they'll say they have it." Marconi shook his head and scowled at the word 'paisan'. His frown reversed itself, however, when Burner shoved off on his board, and vanished leaving only twin trails of flames in his wake.

Conan smiled at her, "Can't be hurt? Hmmm, I can see that being useful... I don't know how useful we'll be, I can alter gravity - make an area zero gravity or several times the earths normal gravity..."

Felicity butted in, "And I can change things from being made of one material into another, for example concrete into ice, wood into steel, wierd eh?"

Conan pointed to Felicity, "By the way this is Felicity, or Flick as I've started calling her - and I'm Conan... Erm, not the barbarian... "

It was a wierd situation, everything felt surreal, their whole lives ripped apart and thrown together overnight. Luckily the cameraderie from escaping the government truck meant Conan and Flick already had a bond.

Smokemare pondered for a moment, it sounded a tall order, get in, get the bomb, get the codes, then get out without being detected?! Still... If anyone had a chance he did.

He took directions to the secret facility and left. It was still morning so he decided to head straight out and try to scope out the area. The streets were full of people by the time he left the hospital. Given the last nights events it felt strange, he felt like he was walking alone for the first time in years. The dark shadow that had been rotting his soul from the inside out had been excised.

At the same time, he was fearful of the government organisations who were clearly out to destroy him, and his new found companions. He eyed the people in the street with suspicion, most of them were obviously heading to work. He walked briskly to the location Nick had told him the secret facility was based. Occasionally glancing up at the crowds, mainly keeping his head down and trailing the pavement.

He glanced up and stopped dead in his tracks, he staggered to a halt. There on the other side of the street, was... Well... It looked like him, only not looking so ragged, wearing jet black. He was so taken a back he blinked and... He was gone... He peered up the street, cars were now rumbling past, people were criss crossing each other on the pavement, where had he gone?

He couldn't spot him, was his mind playing tricks on him?

Unnerved he strode on towards the old rail bridge where the base was hidden.

Nightmare of course had spotted him, and chortled to himself, he hadn't tried to avoid him on purpose - he simply had nothing to say to the man. He saw him as too insignificant to waste any time on. He kept walking and the crowd folded around him. He was on his way to purvey more death and destruction to the pathetic innocents that inhabitted the city.

Sable found herself liking Conan, despite herself. Felicity seemed a bit withdrawn, if friendly. She reminded Sable of Serenity. "Gravity? That is so cool!"

She totally missed his reference to a barbarian. He certainly wasn't talking about that late night guy with the red hair... unless the definition of barbarian had taken on a whole new meaning. She decided not to press the issue, though.

She turned to Felcity, and said, "Can you turn things into... like diamonds and stuff? That would be awesome!" She sighed and peered down the hall at Nick's office. "Look, Nick said something about Smokey helping us to bust Kyle out of the place he's in. But I think he's trying to stall it for some reason, so... we're heading out now. Serenity knows where he is, and I've got this." She brandished the full auto .22 machine pistol. "I think that between the four of us, we could do it, you know?"

She thought for a moment, biting her bottom lip. "Like, you Conan, you could maybe generate heavy gravity between us and some shooters, so they're bullet's just drop to the ground.... and I guess even steel bars aren't a problem when you can change them into glass, huh? Honestly, the only thing I can really add to his effort is to be a human shield." She took a breath and furroed her brow, "Oh yeah... do either of you have a ride?"

Conan rubbed his chin, "Erm, are you sure Nick is cool with... Aww, what the hell - let's do it anyway! Ride? Hmmm, I have a truck with no doors and no engine... Erm, no - Flick?"

Felicity shook her head and muttered under her breath, "Hmmph! Failed my test four times - guess god wants me to remain a pedestrian..."

Conan smiled, a metaphorical lightbulb almost visible above his head, "We could borrow one? There's loads of cars around and I'm sure we could borrow one and return it without doing any danage - possible without the owner even knowing! Um, as long as we returned it in time? What do you think?"

"Shayla?... Shayla!?!" Mr. Phillips voice nearly echoed as it rang through the room, snapping Shy out of her thoughts. "I believe I asked you to solve the problem on the board." He pointed at the Algebra problem on the board.

"I'm sorry Mr. Phillips." Shy got up and walked to the board and stood there for a moment as she started to think through the problem. The solution struck her and she started working on the problem. Once she was done she put the chalk down and brushed her hands off on her jeans.

"Very good Shayla, you may sit down." Shy looked up at the clock noticing it was about time for the bell to ring. "Class, today's homework is problems 1 through 30 evens only." As he finishe his sentence the bell rung. "Shayla, please stay here for a moment."

Shy rolled her eyes as she picked up her stuff, and made her way up to the desk. "Yes Mr. Phillips?"

"I just wanted to ask what was wrong, you've never looked so uninterested in my class all year, as you did today."

"Nothing you can really help me with, but thanks for asking." Shy started to walk away.

"My door is always open. You have a wonderful mind, just wish you would use it to it's full potential."

"Yeah, so do I." Shy walked out of the room and went to the cafeteria where lunch was being served.

"Shayla, what are you haiving today?" The lunch ladies voice was still pleasant as it always was.

"I'll take a piece of pepperoni pizza, and something sweet." Shy smiled and took the piece, and then grabbed a brownie. After payin she made her way outside, grabbing Shaina on her way.

Chase exited the kitchen and heard the conversation between the 3 teenagers who were in the hallway speaking. And sat down on one of the chairs in the area, petting the hawk as it fell to sleep in her arms. Sharla walked up to Chase and layed down at her feet, purring.

Sable cocked her head suspiciously at Chase, and gestured for the group to withdraw down the hall, to the bank of elevators. "I don't trust that one.. she creeps me out." She turned to address Conan, "I don't know about 'borrowing' a car. I have an idea that with what we're about to do, any vehicle we take has a good chance of being crashed up or simply abandoned. But I'll bet the van that me and Serenity came in is still down in the parking garage."

The elevator doors opened and Sable gestured for the others to go in ahead of her. As she stepped into the elevator, she cast one last suspicious glace at the creepy chick with the serpent lisp.

As the elevator started going down, Sable was suddenly overcome with the reality of what was happening. Yesterday, she had been a high school hall-crawler, and today she was planning an assualt on a government facility, to bust out a captured friend. In all honesty, she didn't even know Kyle, but the way he had sacrificed himself to give her and Serenity a chance to get away had encouraged her to think fondly of him.

Reality check: They were a group of young people, albeit with powers, about to storm a secret government facility. She had a creeping sensation that she was in way over her head, but refused to show any of it.

In the parking garage, as they approached the black van, Sable turned to make a quick speech to the others. "Look, guys. Let's be honest... we're about to try to bust somoene out of a highly guarded place, someplace that fully trained marines might have a problem with. Like, this is some seriously Mission Impossible shit, you know? But, the fact that it can't be done is no reason not to try. So let's go do it." She put her hand out, looking at each of them in the eyes, in turn.

Again with the white lights, these goverment esque people loved those sterile white lights. Kyle was strapped, again, to a medical gurney. Rubber cuffs and a Rubber bed, smart. Someone sat next to him in a chair. He couldn't see that far to the side and his head was secured in place by two rubber straps, one on his forehead and one on his neck.

"Mr. Strommel, how are you today?" Kyle didn't respond, the voice was female and surprisingly comforting. "I see...Kyle, if I may call you that, you are in a position here that suggests you cooperate." Again Kyle said nothing. "You know what we are going to do to you if you don't..." Yeah he knew, the same thing they would do if he did. Doesn't matter, just gives you a false sense of security. "You're pretty tough for a kid, you know that. I really have to hand it to you. Mutants in their thirties and twenties we've captured cracked in the first few sessions. They were reduced to screaming, babling, husks of life...useless for everything except study. You are resiliant, strong willed, and determined to undermine us to the very end...you're a challenge."

Kyle grinned, good, he didn't want this to be easy for them. "So, since you won't respond to us torturing you..." His bed slowly started to rise, lifting his head and eyes up to see Jessica in a chair before him. Bloodied and bruised as he was, it marred her beautiful figure and structure. She was a train wreck. He knew what they were going to do, he wasn't sure if he could handle it. His body fidgeted in place, "You low life scum, you don't even have the balls to just torture me huh."

She laughed as she walked over to Jessica. The woman was a brunette with her hair tied up in a bun on top of her head. Glasses sat sharply on her nose and her gray suit was perfectly straightened and cleaned. Jessica's mouth was taped shut but Kyle saw the tears streaming down her face, leave clean trails through the grime and blood covering her skin.

"You're right, I don't have the balls. The real thing you should ask right now, is if you can handle this." He couldn't, Kyle simply would not be able to handle watching her get tortured. She smiled at him, "Oh no, you're not just going to watch...you're going to do it for us." No...thats impossible. Kyle knew he would never hurt her, how did they expect him to...He saw a pair of lab coat scientists walk in carrying a pair of cables. Another walked in behind them with a small tub of water.

"NO!, don't you come near me!" Kyle screamed, thrashing violently against his restraints. They refused to budge and the scientists went about putting Jessica's bare feet into the tub of water and placing one end of the cables in the water.

The woman laughed again. "You see Mr. Strommel, you have yet to truly expereince pain. Pain like the kind you brought upon your parents when you killed them..."

"No! No, no...it wasn't my fault. I couldn't control it." Kyle wimpered as he cried, remembering the murder of his parents.

"YOU COULD HAVE!" She screamed at him. "Hook him up...she is useless to us now anyway."

"I'm so sorry Jessica, I can't stop them." The latched the cables to Kyle's hands. Kyle saw the electricity surge through her body as she flinched and reacted violently to the pain. They removed the cables and jessica was smoking, blood dripping from her nose. She looked up at Kyle, her eyes pleading to him...pleading for him to stop. But he couldn't there was nothing he could do.

"I'm sorry...so sorry." He said to her again. The woman stepped between them and knelt in Kyle's line of sight.

"You're going to kill her...all you have to do is tell us about your friends' powers. So we can develop means to stop them from hurting others." Kyle translated that in his head. 'all you have to do is expose your friends' weaknesses so we will have an easier time taking them down.'

"I...I can't..." Kyle closed his eyes, but his eyelids were pulled apart by the woman. She wore rubber gloves, he fingertips held his eyelids open.

"Then watch how you kill her." She forced him to watch as they hooked him up again to the cable and the electricity surged through her until she stopped moving...she was dead. Kyle was crying his eyes out, he hated himself, his power, and the woman before him. "You have nobody to blame but yourself for her death. Her blood his on your hands." They took Jessica's body from the room, a group of men with metallic rods enterred. They were coated in rubber too, they stood next to the woman.

"Dr. Rullez, may we proceed now?" One asked her. Kyle embedded the name in his head.

"Rullez...I'm going to kill you, you bitch!" Kyle yelled at her with rage. She laughed at him again.

"Yes...make sure he 'feels' the depth of the situation." The group of men approached brandishing their clubs, Rullez retreated from the room.

"With pleasure." The leader returned as they began systematically beating the sense out of Kyle once more.

Conan grasped her hand first, "Who said it can't be done? If we think first and act cleverly then they won't stand a chance of stopping us!"

Flick tapped her hand on top next, "Besides, you didn't experience being captured by them... We escaped in transit - I get the feeling we got off lightly in doing so... We can't leave anyone to those bastards - they've taken our whole lives away from us!"

The three exchanged a knowing glance, a sense of stronger cameraderie, and a subtle understanding that despite their powers they risked death or capture...

Conan kicked the tyre of the van after they'd released their grasp, "Well, who's driving this hunk of junk then?"

Serenity had slipped her hand into the pile, but as usual, she was barely noticed. As her hand rested on those of the others, though, she smiled and connected them. They would feel an increased urge to watch each other's backs, to be friends. Her smile faded back into the melancholy that usually ruled her, as Sable spoke up.

"Well... lets just say that it was a good thing that I couldn't be hurt the last time I drove... it was ugly. So... it'll be one of you two, I am sure." Sable slipped into the passenger seat, and under the dash where she yanked out some wires and quickly hot-wired the van. "Still, you do learn something growing up in the 'hood'."

Burnout woke first as his eyes slowly opened, the room was empty besides him on one couch and Phantom on the other.

He rose slowly and nudged Phantom with his leg, "Get up, we have work to do."

Phantom shook awake when Burnout kicked him and rose from the couch, "Where's Nightmare?" he asked rubbing his eyes. Burnout scanned the room for a moment "Must have gotten an earlier start than us. Phantom shrugged as he pulled on his boots that lay next to him, "So what we hittin' today?"

Burnout stretched as he answered, "We don't have a target yet, but I say it can't hurt just to go cause some trouble around town."

Phantom ginned menacingly, "Amen to that."

Both of them then turned and walked out the door and exited the building into the rising sunlight. "Ready?" Burnout asked.

Phantom's eyes began to glow green, "Let's do this."

St. Micheal's Medical Center, Mutant Safehouse, Sable's Van - the Parking Lot.

Conan listened the to the engine burble into life. He looked at Felicity and raised an eyebrow, "Shall I drive?"

With that he clambered into the drivers seat, Felicity next to him, then Sable and Serenity squoze in on the opposite end of the bench. He worked the clutch and dropped the van into reverse then backed out.

Soon they were rumbling down the high street, Conan was working the gears hard, trying to get the van up to a decent speed, "Jeez this things slow..."

Felicity grinned at this and reached behind with hand and planted it firmly on the steel bulkhead. Gradually at first the painted metal started to glitter and change, soon the body work of the entire van had changed and it lurched forward with alarming urgency. He looked at her stunned, "What did you do?"

"Simple, I made all the body work into lightweight alluminium - don't crash though, I dunno how strong it is..."

Now tearing away in the direction Sable had directed him Conan was pedal to the metal and making good progress. He shouted over the noise of the engine, "Hey, which way now? Do you think it's a good idea going to the front entrance? Perhaps if we to get ourselves around the back or something we could make a more discreet entrance?"

Chase smiled to herself as she heard their conversation, then they decided to go to the elevator. She had heard what they were planning to do. She waited for a while, long enough to let them get out of the garage before she got up and walked into Nicks Office.

"Hey Nick, what'sss yourrrr plan now?"

Chase shut the door as Sharla entered behind her, and then locked it to ensure no one else would enter. Then took a seat, letting Sharla take the seat next to her.

"It would seem that you have a bunch of childrrrren waiting to die for you, so what'ssss next?"

Smokemare looked at the scrap of paper Nick had given him. Then he looked up at the apartment block. It didn't look like a government facility, it looked like a high tech block of expensive apartments. He pulled out his cigarettes and lit one up to buy some time to scope the place out. There was the main door, with two doormen smiling at passers by and occasionally opening the door for residents leaving. Was the whole building a government facility? If he wondered over and tried to walk in citing he was interested in buying an apartment there would they let him?

He glanced down at his ragged, street worn clothes, his dirty grey trench coat and his fingerless gloves... Somehow he doubted anyone would believe him, let alone government secret ops, posing as doormen...

Puffing on his cigarette he walked on past, Nick had informed him the place was on the 157th floor, near the top. The doormen caught a glimpse of him through the crowd but not enough to arouse suspicion.

Once past he crossed the street, there were alleyes behind the towers, so he walked down one, heading to the service entrances. As expected of course he could see long before you got to the building he had to enter, a tall barbed wire fence with camera's and electric cable running across. He puffed on his cigarette for a moment, contemplating whether he was definately wout of shot of the cameras, he was a long way away but... He walked further away just in case then stubbed his cigarette out on the floor as his molecules began to seperate. The thick cloud of grey smoke thinned and wafted up out of the alley.

Soon he was high above the city streets. Floating around, trying to sense a way into the building. There was a ventilation system, slowly drawing air in from the outside, he allowed it to slowly draw him in, eventually he felt himself being effectively zapped by a large current. What would have been fatal to most beings, caused little more than minor discomfort. Clearly they were operating some sort of bio shield, trying to kill any organisms that might enter the building this way.

Next he felt his particles run into something solid, but the air passed through it. Now in a wide and tall ventilation shaft, he formed solid to investigate. The tunnel was tiny, cramped and dark. He fumbled in his coat for his lighter and flicked it on, sure enough there was a foam, particle filter in place...

Damn it they were thorough... Had they heard about his encounters with their agents? It was possible he poked at the stuff with his finger, it felt like a rigid cardboard. He reached into his pockets and fumbled for something sharp, anything, something he could use.

He had nothing...

It was a bit of a puzzler, he pushed on the filter, but it gave only a little, to try and kick it through would be noisy and not definately successful. He tried holding his lighter against the material, but it proved not to be flammable.

Frustrated, but determined to return he drifted out the way he came, had h been detected? It was possible, but it didn't seem likely...

Nick's Black Van, Somewhere in the City

Sable shrugged, eschewing the safety belt in the seat. She and Serenity were small enough to share the front seat together as Conan drove. "Whatever, just get us going west, out of the city."

She looked down at the glove compartment and attacked it, digging through the materials inside. "Aha!" She exclaimed as she withdrew a New York state atlas. She flipped through the pages until finding a close-up of the city, and the surrounding areas. "Can you show us?" She asked Serenity.

Serenity took the book and scanned the pages for a moment before resting one finger on a spot, and traced the length of a state highway. She traced the highway for a few inches, then tapped the map.

Sable nodded, showing Conan the map. "Here, state highway 32, looks like we'll be looking for...." Sable hesitated to look down at the map for a moment. "Ah, for county road 232."

"As for how to get into the place... I think it might be better if someone causes a ruckus at the front gate, while the others slip in and do what they have to do." She hesitated for a moment, letting the gears in her head crank away. "From what I can see, guys... I'm the best bet for a diversion. When those boys start trying to shoot me down and fail, they'll call for back up. That should clear up the facility itself for a few talented individuals to get in and out..."

By the time it had taken her to talk (she felt like she was talking too much), they had already reached the junction for state highway 32, and she spotted a truck stop just off the road. "Hey.... pull in here!" She turned to look Conan in the eye, "I have a great idea..."

Conan raised an eyebrow at her, then smiled and shrugged, "Whatever you say boss!"

Flick giggled at this as Conan swung the wheel around and pulled into the truck stop. Conan pulled on the parking brake, but left the engine running, "Alright, what have you got in mind?"

State Highway 32, Flying Mac Truck Stop

Sable cocked a grin at them and exited the van. "I'll be right back." With that, she ran off into the truck stop. Inside, she made several purchases with the last of her money, including a 24 pack of 8oz. bottles of water. back at the van, she displayed her goods to the group, and looked up at Flick.

"Think you can turn this water into something else? Like... nitro?" She asked, holding up one of the small bottles. "Instant bombs?"

Conan picked up a package of chocolate candies and said, "And what about these?"

Sable smiled and said "Snacks, for the drive."

City Island High

Lunch went just fine after explaining that she was just trying to get to know her little sister better. After lunch Shy and Shaina started walking towards the school.

"Did you notice the new substitute teacher, Shy?"

"Yeah I had her in Chemistry."

"Well, she's been watching you the entire lunch time."

"Really?" Shy looked over her shoulder and noticed the teacher look away from the window and down at a desk. "Heh, she's a bit strange. But I kind of like her."

"Watch yourself, I don't like her at all." Shaina walked into the building looking back at the class with Miss Shawl in it, watching as she once again went back to looking down at the desk. "Somethign wrong with that one."

"Chris, the phone is for you." Shawna's voice screamed up into the office.

"Thanks." Chris picked up the phone. "Hello?..... No, no... I told them to stay away from them! I don't care what they think, pull them out of there immediately!..... What do you mean they are out of contact?! If they are there under your instruction I swear I'm going to fire you!...... Fine, then I'll fire him!"

The phone slammed down on the desk.

"Daddy...?" Kristy came into the office. "Everything ok?"

"Yes hun, just some business stuff."

"Okay Daddy, I'm going to go get lunch, you comming?"

"I'll be down in a bit."

"Okay.. but Mommy is going to be mad if you miss lunch AGAIN..." Kris skipped out of the office and down the stairs. As Chris picked up the phone.

"Yes, I need you to do something for me... This is to make up for the favor you owe me, if you do it right, I'll even put a nice sum into your salary.... No, I don't want him dead, just... gone." Chris hung up the phone and went to eat lunch.

The Docks

The sound came through on the radio mike clearly.

"Don't you worry about a thing, Mr. Marconi, I'll get your 'package' there on time."

The two figures were barely visible to the naked eye but the team observing them had all the equipment they needed to see them clearly. One, the courier was their mark and the other was Albert Marconi a small fry mobster they had no real interest in.

"Yeah, well, it better be. If you can get there quick enough, we'll talk about you taking over all the routes."

"Trust me paisan, call your boys in about five minutes, and they'll say they have it."

The two were lying on the roof of a warehouse a good distance from the two and they watched casually as the courier sped off leaving a small train of flame behind him. They watched for a few second before one of them pulled out a rifle and began sighting it on Marconi who was starting to walk towards a waiting car. The other was dialling in a code on a radio handset.

"Wylie Coyote here, road runner on route." Turning it off he chuckled and picked up a pair of goggles focusing in on Marconi who was starting to climb into the black sedan.

A metallic click sound came from beside him and he watched the car errupt into flames.

"Gotta love incendiary rounds, lets move out," said the shooter with a smile and the two packed up their gear and climbed down to the courier van that was parked with a wheel jack hoisting it up. The third member of their team in the uniform of the company was screwing back on the last nut for the tire and the three climbed into the van and pulled away.

****************************************************

In their transport Felix got a click in his ear piece and hushed the others.

"Wylie Coyote here, road runner on route" came through and he smiled.

"Looks like bravo team are earning their pay tonight," he said to the others.

They looked at him strangely. Each of the teams worked completely independently of one another and it was exceptionally rare for them to coordinate on missions and they never knew each others names. It was only because of the current climate that their operations were crossing paths.

"So when are we meeting Angel," Michael chipped in.

This prompted a chorus of jeers and a few playful jabs from the people next to him.

"Oh you'll meet her all in good time. We just need to let her do her thing for the time being. Just not with you quite yet Mike." Felix grinned and Michael gave him the finger before sitting back in his seat.

The co-driver leaned back to Felix.

"ETA four minutes, briefing in 8. Extra gear's at the mobile command. Good luck sir."

Felix nodded and gave the ready hand signal and the team set about checking their equipment and preparing for their arrival at the mobile command centre which was being used for the current op.

Nick's Black Van - State Highway 32

Felicity shrugged at the suggestion, "Hmm, I could try - I'd have to know a bit more about it though - isn't nitro a chemical compound? Knowing that it goes bang isn't really enough, I need to know what it is."

Conan rolled his eyes at her, "Look, Nitroglycerin, or trinitroglycerin, sometimes called glyceryl trinitrate is basically nitrated glycerol - chemical formula C3H5(NO3)3. It's got an explosive velocity of 7700 metres per second and is sensitive to friction and shock."

Flick screwed her face up at him, "Jesus... Listen to the professor! How do you know so much about it?"

"Pop's a chemist... and a war nutter - he talks about this sorta stuff all the time... Hey if you can make it - make the plastic bottles steel - make em' more deadly."

"Well I can try... Here..."

She grabbed a bottle and dipped her finger in, then pulled it out. She held her wet finger up and concentrated for a moment. "Oh well here goes..." With that she tried to click her finger with her thumb. Nothing.

She sniffed her finger, "No... It's not water - whatever it is doesn't seem explosive though... Let me try again."

After wiping her finger on the dash she wet it again, and concentrated. Conan piped up, "C3H5(NO3)3, nitrated glycerol! Glycerol is carbon, oxygen and hydrogen - So nitrogen chemically..."

"Yes, yes professor I'm sure... Let me concentrate!"

After a moment the liquid on the tip of her finger turned a slight shade of yellow, she prepared to click her fingers, "Here goes nothing..."

*** BANG !!! ***

The cab of the van lit up with the flash and smoke whisped from the explosion. She looked at her fingers, "Ouch! That hurt!"

Conan chuckled, "I'm not surprised - you're lucky you didn't blow your fingers off! Don't make any more yet - it's highly sensitive."

"Blow my fingers off? Why didn't you say BEFORE hand?"

He chuckled, "Didn't think you'd manage it... It's a complicated chemical... Make the bottles metal ready - that would be safe."

State Highway 32, Flying Mac Truck Stop

Serenity flinched when the tiny explosion went off, but she was not reacting to the sudden bang. She flinched at the sudden flash of pain in Flick's hand. She was not hurt badly, but Serenity could see small red marks on Flick's fingertips. She gently laid her hand on Flick's shoulder, actively urging the other girl to pay not attention to her, and a small glow of golden light issued from beneath Serenity's hand. It was over in a moment, as the damage was light, and Serenity smiled, confident that Flick wouldn't even be able to remember what the pain was like.

Sable grinned like a cheshire cat and whooped as the tiny explosion went off. "Alright! Okay, let's go, I'll tell you the plan on the way."

As Conan pulled away from the truck stop, Sable ripped open the package of a strawberry swiss cake and munched it as she spoke. "Okay, we'll get to the county road that leads off to the installation. Once we are there, we'll pull over, you'll turn all these bottles into nitro... all of them! We'll pad it up as best as we can, to stabilize it... and then I'll drive the van right into the front of the building. I reckon that should give you guys a chance to slip in, grab Kyle, and get out. Whattaya think?"

Somewhere in the City

Burner used a lot of back alleys and side roads, where he didn't have to worry too much about traffic. As close as he could figure, the fastest he had yet to pull off was Mach 5, which could eaily make a mess of you if you ran right into a truck, or a tree. He was thankful that his mind seemed to work as fast as his body, and thus he was able to avoid most obstacles. To him, it was not as if he were moving overly fast, but rather like everything else was moving very slowly.

He checked his watch, and noted that he had two minutes left on his own time limit, and he was just halfway there. He would have to crank it up a notch. He hit a main road and shoved the pavement with his foot again, and his speed doubled. Now, instead of flaming trails, he left behind a thin wake of melted pavement. The last leg of his journey was nearly a straight shot, and he was reveling in moving like a speed demon in the land of the slow.

An Alley Somewhere along Burner's Route

Two bums were slouched in the alley one of them leaning against a dumpster at the streets edge and waving his the paper bag that contained nothing more than mineral water in it. The smell of urine and cheap wine emanating from him ensured no pedestrians strayed close enough or did so for very long.

"Target approaching e.t.a 12 seconds, speed... hmm fast enough. Just don't miss."

Up on a roof top several blocks away two more men were lying on a roof top looking down the street with great big sniper scopes and were trying to track the blur of motion that was tracking down the street towards them.

"They really make it too easy don't they boss," one of the pair said with a smile as he gazed through the scope.

"That they do," the other said and picked up a radio. "Stand by for deployment in 3....2.....1...."

Down on the street the bum who'd been leaning against the wall stood up and pulled a black ball from his pocket. Pressing a small indentation on it he threw it in a slow arc up a little above head height and threw himself over the dumpster. There was a faint click sound and if they'd been close enough they would have heard a faint swishing sound. It was closely followed by a drawn out splattering sound which quickly faded into the background. Other than the sound the device gave off and the splattering sound, there was no other indication that anything had actually happened.

Standing up the man didn't bother brushing himself off but walked calmly to the street edge and picked up the black ball that was now lying in the gutter. Glancing down to his left he looked up the street with the slightest of grimaces.

"I feel for the poor bastard who's gotta clean this shit up."

"Amen brother," chipped in the other bum who was lifting a radio out of his pocket. "Pitch to home base, coming in for the run."

"Nice throw," came the laugh through the radio.

Less than 5 minutes later there was no sign of the bums or the spotter team on the roof. Less than 3 minutes after that people started to notice the mess on the pavement and a few disturbing calls to 911 were made. 5 minutes later a dozen police officers and paramedics were on the scene and cordoning it all off. The official line was that it was a mutant who had been responsible for the deaths of several police officers earlier that day. While the pretence was made at establishing the fact that they hadn't set out to kill the mutant responsible public opinion was already so strongly against mutants no one cared or cared enough to voice it publicly.

((OOC: Merlin, there you go, I know you'd wanted to drag it out but for the sake of progressing the thread I felt this might be apt but if it isn't I can change it and we can work something else out. Catch me on MSN/AIM if you want to scheme some more :) Other than that I look forward to reading it from Burners perspective.))

Nick's Black Van - State Highway 32

Conan eyed Sable suspiciously, "You're sure this isn't going to... Ahem... Damage you? Isn't it going to even hurt?"

Meanwhile Flick had already turned three plastic containers in to metal and was working on the fourth.

State Highway 32

Sable shrugged, and simply replied "I've taken falls from upwards of two hundred feet, been hit by a garbage truck on the freeway, and shot in the face by a crackhead when I was thirteen. If it does hurt, then it'll the first time since I turned ten years old. Just make sure you, Flick and Serenity are in a good position when it blows."

OOC: Nytram, feel free to take us on up to the juntion to county road 232 in your next post.

Somewhere in the City

Burner's grin widened as he looked ahead and saw a light that was on the verge of turning, allowing the cross traffic to pass in front of him. He saw it turn, and the first vehicles passing through the light. He glanced both ways as he approached the intersection and braked his approach just enough to allow himself to pass between two vehicles passing through the intersection. He had just passed the main part of the intersection as he saw a small cylinder fly out of a nearby alley and bounce twice as it landed, and then it shot up into the air, spinning madly.

The cylinder's outer shell peeled away, and razorwire was deployed in nearly all directions, using peices of the outer shell as anchorage. Essnetially, what Burner was faced with was a spider's web of razor wire, now stretched across the road before him. The timing and aim had been perfect, and Burner had no time to react before passing through the barrier. To onlookers, a fine spray of blood seemed to have erupted from the very air, followed by a sudden deluge of unidentifiable red chunks
