The Midnite Cantina... For those who can't sleep (open)

Post by coronhorn » Tue Jan 24, 2006 12:06 am

Chase dipped his head as he slipped through the lower than average entryway to the small cantina, as his eyes adjusted to the lights he noticed that there were a few others spread throughout the small establishment. It didn't bother him since he was pretty sure they were only here because like him sleep would simply not come to him this fine evening on Corellia. His wife was back at thier modest flat sound asleep. He envied her that, it was probably a talent that she'd picked up during her time with the rebellion back before the empire had fallen. He smiled at that as he saddled up the bar and waited for the tender to make his way down to him.

The Force he though must have a stranger since of humor to have paired the two of them, a one time Rebel freedom fighter and a reformed imperial stormtrooper. He shook his head at the irony of it all as the keep finally mosied up to his spot at the bar,

"What'll it be tonight Chase?"

"The usual Clay."

"One Corellian Mytai coming right up."

Chase smiled as the slightly younger man moved off to mix up the drink, he'd gotten to be a pretty regualar customer of Clayton's since he and his wife had relocated to the planet a few months before. A few minutes later the 'keep depositied the frosty beverage in front of him,

"You still having trouble with those dreams?"

"Nah, just your general insomnia tonight, it's actually been a while since I had one of those."

The other man smirked, "Well either way, just let me know when you want another."

Chase nodded and took a pull on the potent concoction letting the warmth of the liquor settle in his belly...

Jade watched in the general direction of the bar from the small booth she had comendeered earlier. A habit to sit in this booth, a habit to kick anyone who had been sitting in it out. She sighed she really was going crazy, the bar keep had told her he could set his chrono by the time she walked in and out. Why did she have to do things the exact same every day? She had a job an easy simple job that took minimal effort, but she did that same thing in that job every day nothing new came up. She came to this bar after she was done with work and sat here till the early hours, then went to the small apartment she called her home.

"A sad life." She mumbled to herself as she glared off a man that looked curiously at her as he tried to sit down. He immediatly got up and walked back to the bar scoping out another target. "A sad life indeed." She said alittle more loudly.

Chase chuckled as he watched the woman in the corner booth ward off an unwanted suitor with a glare that could have melted the ice on hoth,

"Hey Clay, who's she?" he asked turning his attention back to the man behind the bar,

"You kidding, that's Jade, she's in here more than you are. Can set your chrono by her."

Chase arched an eyebrow at the remark, up till this point he'd always thought of himself as the midnite's most reliable customer. Chase glance back over his shoulder at the younger woman,

"You're pulling my chain, I've never seen her in here."

"Just cause you've never noticed her doesn't mean she's not been here."

"What's she drinking?"

The barkeep gave Chase a sour look, "One she's too young for you. Two, you're married and three Chianna would kill you."

"Relax man, I'm not gonna hit on her, just curious as to who I'm sharing my bar with."

The tender chuckled at the joke, "It's as much hers as it is yours, and in reality you're both subleting from me. That said I don't think she's ordered anything yet tonight."

"Ah, one of those then..."

The barkeep shook his head and moved off down the bar to tend to one of the other customers. Chase turned his back to the bar and took a long pull on his mytai and studied the younger woman whiling trying to not look like he was doing so, he wasn't quite as good at it as his wife but practice never hurt...

She noticed eyes on her at once , "Somthing new." She said to herself as she casually glanced up, the man was not very good at it, she knew it was the man talking with the barkeep that had been watching her. He tried hard, but failed miserably to hide the fact that he was watching her.

Starting to call for a waitress she noticed that one was already standing in front of her, "Am I that predictable?" She asked the waitress, "Yes, I've got my chrono to go off around the general time you normally order, you were a bit late tonight actually." The waitress grinned at Jade. "The usual?" She asked and Jade nodded. The waitress bustled off and returned a moment later with a small drink that was about half head and half ale. "Whos that man?" She ask the bosomy waitress nodding in the direction of the bar. "Chase, hes married." The waitress said after a moment. Jade nodded and thanked the waitress. Who turned as another customer started to call her.

"You may as well come over." She said in a voice loud enough to carry to the bar. "No sence standing and getting you legs tired." She was supriced at herself this was something new, she had sat alone at this bar and had talked to no one but the waitress since she had first started coming here, too many nights to count she had spent in this bar alone. She had liked it, but something new would be nice.

Chase feigned surprised for a momment looking around as if he didn't know she was talkign to him, it was ofcourse all an act, piccking up his glass he casually strolled over the small booth,

"You always this congenial?" he questioned with a grin as he slipped in across from her, "Sorry bout giving you the eyeball, just never seen you in here before tonight, my firend Clay says you're more of a regular than I am though so shows how attentive I am."

He flashed her his best immitation of Luke Skywalkers farmboy grin, "That said don't take this the wrong way but I'm not going to hit on you." He fingered the golden band on his left ring finger, "The wife would kill me and the authorites would never find the body. Ofcourse thats one of the things I love 'bout her. But listen to be running off at teh mouth, my name's Chase..."

Settign hsi drink down he extended a hand across the table in greeting...

Jade looked at him with a small grin of her own. "Thanks for clearing that up from the start." She said with a hint of half sarcasm half gratitude. "You are the first person I've talked to since i've been coming here, a long time I suppose." She looked at his band. "A wife, thats good, I was married once a long time ago, he couldn't put up with my..." She paused for a moment searching for the right word. "Problems, he left me, for some girl on another planet, took the shuttle first chance he could, I wasn't all that bad just a little awkward." She took a sip of the ale she had waited the right time and the fizz was just enough to make her taste an extra pop. "I'm sorry I'm not good at conversation." She said with some saddness.

Chase pulled back his hand slowly and then motioned for the waitress to bring him another Mytai,

"Don't get me wrong, marriage can be alotta fun, but its not for everyone."

When the waitress returned with his drink he slipped her an extra credit chit and took a swig out of his glass and decided to change the subject,

"So what do you do besides hang out here and sleep, assumign ofcourse that you do actually sleep."

She looked up after another sip of her drink, "Well I do sleep that doesn't bother me I get about five hours a night." She took another sip, she got exactly five hours a night, or at least ever nights shes been on this planet. "I work in the speeder factory down town, filing and secretary type work, answer calls and the like." Another sip. "You?"

Chase flashed a wry grin, "Well offically, I'm a security specialist on loan to CorSec. Offically."

He didn't say anymore because well it wouldn't be prudent to do so, his duties went way beyond those of a typical security specialist and he was sure there were only a few people on the planet who were coded high enough to know exactly what those were,

"It's all rather dull really, lots of sitting around reviewing security logs and such."

"I'm sure it is." She said taking another sip of her drink. Something inside told her it was time to go. "I must leave now." She told the man as she threw some credits on the table, the exact cost for the drink. "I will see you tomorrow night I hope, thanks for the conversation." She hurried out the bar and three steps before the door she waved to the tender who waved back.

It was a quick jog to her home taking ten minutes exactly, just as it had every other night. A quick look around and she entered her home a small apartment at the top of a complex. Picking up the datapad on the counter she read through it, a list of bounties that could be collected. She looked through, she wanted to get the closest one to her home, no one would expect her of bounty hunting, that was the best thing about her problems. Dawning a skin tigh sneak suit a pair of vibro knives, one at each hip, and a short staff she set out.

The meeting was small three men group each with cases of something, no wonder someone wanted them dead. The bounties on all three were minimal but together they would bring in enough for a small time.

She survayed the situation, ten steps from the front to them five from the back entrance, she chose that and she slinked over to them her suit doing its job and blending with what it could. It was soon when one of them noticed her, he looked confused at first, then understood and leveled his blaster. Jade began to run, one step, two, leap and a quick thrust left her vibro blade sticking from the first mans throat. A twirl and she brought the short staff down on the others knee smashing it and sending him to the other knee with a cry of agony, she landed the staff on his head, stopping the crying. She felt a searing pain and smelled roasted flesh, and burning sneak suit. She lunger toward the man the top of the staff connecting with his stomach nocking the wind out of him. A quick switching of the legs and the staff slammed into the side of his neck. He began to raise his blaster and let off a shot barely missing her head. The hilt of a vibroblade protruded from his chest and he fell with suprise in his eyes.

She looked at the three dead men that surrounded her, grabbing her blades and wiping them off on the fallens clothes she put them in their sheaths, left one first. She pulled the men together, shoulder to shoulder, she took everything to identify them, laying the cases they had brought with them, on their stomachs and putting their hands over the cases. She stood back, surveying her work, all three were positioned identically, she sighed with relife she thought that would be hard.

She looked at her chrono the next morning and sighed, she got up at the same time every morning, she needed help, but she said that every morning. A quick trip to the fresher and she went down to the dull and amazingly same work of secretarying that she did every day.

She walked into the bar and hustled some kids out of her booth. She sat down and waited for the right time to order her drink.

OOC: Im sorry but I want to develop a story with this, you working as a security specialist and I a bounty hunter doing illegal bounties could get interesting... The bounty scene took place late at night....

It had been a couple of days since Chase had been down to his favorite haunt and as he walked the block or so in the crisp night air he wondered if the young woman he'd talked with the last time would be there again. Clay had said she was more of a regualr than he. Shaking his head he stepped down into the grotto that formed the entryway into the cantina and pushed the door open and slipped through, the bar was the same as always, his eyes made a quick sweep of the place out of habit and a small smile crossed his lips as he noticed that she was indeed there. Settling up against the bar he motioned for Clay to bring his usual...

The air seemed humid tonight to the lone man as he strode down the backways and alleys of this, the place he'd come to call home. Elaine was at home alone tonight; he hadn't wanted to disturb her with his sleepless tossing. Too much had happened lately; Vrasks' death, the lack of jobs lately, the boy Noodle...

...Somehow that little rapscallion always played on his mind. He'd known the boy for a brief period, but somehow had bonded with him like he'd never thought to bond with a child before. But then, he'd always imagined himself as the loner type, and here he'd been good and comfortable with Elaine for several months now, despite all that had gone on between them in the past.

Yes, it was another one of those nights where insomnia ruled all, and they'd become far too frequent of late. He found these late night walks comforting somehow, and the way they seemed to clear his mind seemed a miracle to him...because nothing else seemed to penetrate the layers of guilt he buried inside himself.

As usual, he wore his black long-sleeved tunic, and some comfortable pants, and his ever-trusty blasters hidden away beneath his clothing. He'd finally perfected his glare however, and generally one look was enough to prevent unwanted company. His aura tended to exude "stay away" on these walks, and he was not afraid. What could a street thug offer him that the countless mercenaries and beasts he'd fought over the past thirty-eight years had not?

That's not to say he was careless. Even a child could kill, and he never forgot it. It was one of his ghosts, after all...

His feet, as always, took him on their own path. He neither chose his late-night courses or attempted to follow any rational direction. He simply walked, and inevitably he found his way home again, like a compass in his body, leading him back to the one person he could find a measure of love in.

He was lost deep in thought as his feet carried him on their way when a faint light caught his eye, and he looked up, conciously stopping his walk. A flickering sign read the Midnite Cantina, and something about it pulled at him.

Perhaps some memory of the past where he'd met with Elaine so many times to collect his assignments tugged at him, but he found himself walking inside, and glancing around cautiously.

The place didn't seem too lively, and why should it? It was, after all, early morning when most sane creatures where passed out in their beds. Where he should be. Elaine would never let him hear the end of it if she woke up without him in the morning...how she was unaware of these late night walks of his was still a mystery. The woman was a walking detective, it seemed...she was deadly, she was beautiful...and she could smell deception on anybody. She chalked it up to her training, and he didn't doubt it for an instant. He'd worked for her, and then with her for too long now. There was nobody he trusted more...except for Vrask. But that was in the past...

Looking around once more, he noticed at least one man in view...then he took a seat at the bar, and waited for service.

"I'm gonna be so glad when we get our next assignment, I'm bored to death here on Corellia." Chase complained to the man behind the bar, "All day long it's just sit and watch, sit and watch..."

When the bar's door squeaked open both Chase and Clay glanced over, it was nearly 3 in the morning, even the Jade girl had gone home,

"I'll be back in a sec." Clay spoke rapping on the bar as Chase took a pull from his glass, tonight he was just drinking a dark Hoth Ice.

Chase watched as his friend moved down to the new guy, he'd seen his fair share of dangerous peoplein his day and this man litterally screamed it... intriuging.

The bartender finished his conversation with the other patron, and moved towards him. Looking back at the entrance briefly, he contemplated just leaving and heading back home. Before he could actually get up though, the bartender arrived and inquired as to what his poison was.

It had actually been awhile since the man named Logan had actually gotten drunk, but on further reflection remembered an old favorite of his.

"I'll have a turbolaser, if you can make it." he growled, and then realizing the look the bartender was giving him, made a concious effort to soften his features. It was all too easy to slip into that paranoiac state that made the difference between saliva or something nastier in your drink, and what you actually ordered. "And if it's not too much trouble." he added, his tone considerably softer, and the hints of a playful grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.

The 'tender moved away to blend the drink, and Logan felt eyes on him. He turned to regard the man perched at a seat further down the bar, and nodded respectfully. A place like this, a man could never be too careful who his company was. Hell, anywhere really. He couldn't afford to have any more enemies; the ones he had were bad enough anyway. The last run-in with CorSec had been close enough to make him seriously consider looking for honest work, and these days anybody could be a rat.

After a few minutes Clay drifted back down the bar towards where Chase was anchored nursing his bottle of hoth ice,

"What's he drinking? I don't think I've seen you make that one before."

"Little something called a Turbolaser, had to go look it up, it's drink invented by a guy named Goran Bystil or something. You wouldn't beleive what's in it. I'll be surprised if the guy is able walk a straight line outta here when he leaves."

Chase chuckled and took another pull on his bottle and then set it back down and began idly peeling the label off the bottle with his thumb nail,

"Anything intresting today at work?" the barkeep inquired with a grin.

"You know I couldn't say even if I wanted to man. Then I'd have to kill you and I like ya too much for that."

Clay chuckled, "Well you see anything intresting on the way home?"

Chase seemed to ponder the question for a momment before a good sized grin spread across his features,

"Well there was this one Twi'lek on the tube car, man she was HOT. She was wearing the one piece dress that was slit up to her hip and had a neckline that went WAY down."

Chase shook his head slightly as his mind recreated the image in his head, "Whew. I'm just glad Chi wasn't there, I'd still be hearing about it."

The barkeep chuckled along with his friend, "You want another?"

Chase glanced down at the nearly empty bottle and then nodded,

"Sure."

The barman nodded and moved back towards the icechest that was situtated midway between his friend and the other man behind the bar...
