Tendrils of Darkness [JO]

Light Freighter Will of the Force
Somewhere on the Outer Rim

It had been a month since the Convocation on Dieron had ended. Aldar and Mira had stayed a few days longer as honoured guests, and when they left a week later, Rhiannon DeVij, leader of the Tak Council, had told them that they were always welcome.

They had been escorted out of Confederate space and into the Known Galaxy - more specifically the Sistoone system - by a Confederate cruiser, the Investigator. The journey had been uneventful, and Aldar and Mira had spent a few days on the planet Sistoone.

On the second day there, however, Aldar had received a vision while meditating. He saw a woman, clad in black and purple, her face hidden by shadows. The woman was about to strike down a man - a Jedi Aldar recognized as one Norun Tarkash, whom he had met briefly on Onderon. He had recognized the place as well:

Nar Shaddaa.

After trying in vain to contact Norun Tarkash, Aldar and Mira had set their course for Nar Shaddaa.

Mira spent most of her time practicing the techniques she had learned during the Sojourn, particularly Electric Judgement and Fold Space. The second one in particular caused her problems.
Aldar, on the other hand, meditated on the problem before him. He was certain that the Force had a purpose in showing him the scene. But what was it? Was he supposed to save Norun Tarkash? Or was it something else?

He was still pondering this question, when the freighter reached Nar Shaddaa...

The Will of the Force sat down on the designated landing pad. After securing it and paying the necessary bribes, Aldar and Mira moved deeper into the Vertical City.

As they walked, Mira asked her master:

"Why did you pay the bribes? Could you not have persuaded them with the Force?" Aldar nodded.
"I could, but it would have been selfish. The Force is our ally, not our servant. We should use it to the benefit of the many, not of the few. Besides," he added with a smile, "one must howl with the wolves you are among. Bribery is commonplace on Nar Shaddaa."
"I see. Thank you, master."

Aldar just smiled, as they continued.

Norun Tarkash resisted the urge to curse. He and his apprentice - and daughter - Nissha had been tracking a Dark Jedi from Eriadu to Nar Shaddaa. This Dark Jedi, a woman known as Zaara Archin, had evaded him at every turn, almost killing him and Nissha on Eriadu by blowing up a warehouse they were in. They had barely escaped alive.

Norun was certain that Zaara was working with someone else on Eriadu, but had been unable to discover who before she had left for Nar Shaddaa. What she was doing here was uncertain, but whatever it was, it was undoubtedly something foul.

Norun and Nissha were holed up in a cheap hotel on the lower levels, trying to find out where Zaara was and what she was doing. Neither had any idea that Aldar and Mira was looking for them.

Zaara was getting tired of the two Jedi. She had first been attacked by them on Eriadu, trying to meet a contact in regards to buying a Holocron. She had been forced to destroy the warehouse where the meeting would take place, along with the contact, to cover her tracks. She had assumed they had been killed too, when they had showed up on Nar Shaddaa.

She was sitting in her rented apartment, considering the options. On one hand, she could ignore them and meet with her new contact as planned, but that might allow the Jedi to interfere again. On the other hand, attacking them could not only prove risky, but could also lead more Jedi to investigate her.

An hour later, she had made her decision.

"Yeah, I know the Jedi you're talking about. But it's going to cost you a thousand credits." Aldar smiled and replied.
"You don't want a thousand credits. You want to tell me as a favour to the Jedi." The thug repeated.
"I don't want a thousand credits. I want to tell you as a favour to the Jedi." He shook his head. "Of course I do. He and his padawan is holed up at this address." The thug handed Aldar a data-chit and left.
"I thought you said to howl with the wolves you're among, Master?" Aldar smiled to Mira.
"I did. He would have cheated me, so I cheated him." Mira shook her head.
"Did he at least provide something useful?"

Aldar inserted the chit into his datapad, then nodded.

"Yes, I have the address. It is not far. Let us go."

After taking a lift down to the appropriate level, Aldar and Mira proceeded towards the hotel. As they rounded a corner, they noticed people fleeing. In the distance, blue light mixed with orange and purple. Immediately aware of what was happening, both retrieved their lightsabers and started running towards the lights.

Down by the hotel, Nissha and Norun were fighting for their lives. Despite his mastery of Makashi and Soresu, Norun was no match for Zaara's unique style. His every attack was met by a block and a lightning-fast counter-attack. Nissha was even more outmatched, ducking and weaving just to avoid the thrusts sent her way.
Zaara was the first to notice the approaching Jedi. Eager to finish the fight, she manoeuvred to bring Nissha in front of her. Seconds later, Nissha was sprawling in the air, her lightsaber clattering to the ground as she fought the invisible force trying to crush her windpipe. The action distracted Norun for one fatal second, and Zaara's lightsaber found her mark in his gut. Dumbfounded, he fell to his knees, his lightsaber sliding between his fingers. Zaara struck to perform a sai cha, only to find her lightsaber crashing against a blue blade. Using the Force, she pushed Nissha over the nearby edge, and concentrated on her new foes.

Zaara quickly found her skills matched by her new opponents. While the man used hard, swift strikes to shatter her defences, the girl danced around, stabbing and striking at every opening. Time was running out, and Zaara decided that she had wasted enough time here. As soon as she could, she blasted the two with lightning, and jumped a level up, ending the fight.

Both Aldar and Mira caught the lightning, but Aldar stopped Mira when she was about to follow Zaara.

"No."
"But Master, she's getting away!"
"If we follow her, we will be playing her game. Let her run."

He dis-ignited his lightsaber and moved to Norun. Norun grabbed his hand.

"Ni...Nissha. Is she..." Mira moved to the edge. Nissha was lying one level below.
"I'll check, Master." Before Aldar could stop her, Mira jumped over the edge. A few seconds later, he felt her voice inside his head. "She's alright, Master." Aldar smiled to Norun.
"She will live."
"Can I...can I see her?"
"Yes."

Mira and Nissha came out of the lift, and made their way back. Norun's eyes were closed, and Aldar was holding his hand. Nissha limped over, a bit faster than her leg liked.

"Dad?" Norun opened his eyes.
"Nissha. I...I'm not going to make it."
"Of course you will, Dad. You'll be fine."
"No, Nissha. I...I feel the...the Force calling me home. Worry not, Nissha," he coughed, and his lips went red with blood, "it is the way of the Force."
"Dad..." Norun took her hand and squeezed it. Then he looked at Aldar."

"Aldar...can I ask," he coughed again, more blood spewing out, "ask you a favour?" Aldar nodded. "Take...take Nissha. Finish her training. Don't...don't let her give in." He looked pleadingly at Aldar, before another cough shook his body. "Please." Aldar nodded again.

"I give you my word, Norun." Norun smiled.
"Thank you." He looked at Nissha. "Al...," another cough. His voice grew weaker, "Aldar is your master now. I...I love you." Nissha broke into tears.
"I love you too, Dad. I'll avenge you."

"No!" Norun squeezed her hand harder. "Do not let your anger dominate you, or you will become like her. Forgive her." Nissha nodded, tears streaming down her face. Norun looked at Aldar. "Will you...will you track down my wife and daughter," another cough, "tell them of my death?"
"I will."
"Thank you, Aldar. I'm sorry...that we never...knew each other better."

Nissha leaned in and kissed him on the brow. He smiled, sighed, and died.
