Beyond the Rim OOC

Post by Pryde »

Haven't decided if Keira knows this at all but I'm fairly certain they can't legally arrest her. She hasn't broken any actual laws besides mouthing off to the Emperor and beyond that she's a member of the Jedi Order and a citizen of the New Republic, she's not bound to their traditions. Either the Jedi or the Republic could have her extradited and released.

Its an empire. Ruled by an emperor. I'm fairly certain that emperor can arrest you because... Well. Because. Our western judicial system doesn't necessarily apply to all societies, not even in real life. And not being from the Jade Worlds is just a question of politics, not whether she is subject to their law or not - because my guess everyone is, within JE space.

Assuming someone tells either of those two organizations.

Furthermore, Keira does not have diplomatic immunity. Just because you're a citizen of the United States doesn't mean you can go to, say, Russia and break their laws and get away with it. You will be arrested, you will be detained.

That's just it, she hasn't broken a law. She was just being disrespectful to a family member--who also happens to be Emperor but still.

Also, there's the matter of her being the equivalent of a Jedi spy and spy exchanges are fairly common though I doubt the Jedi happen to have a JE spy in custody. :?

There very well might be a law about that, or a tradition and etiquette system considered just as binding. There's ample RL examples of disrespect towards a monarch or similar being a very heavy legal offense, by the way.

But I think you are missing the simplest point of all: He is the Emperor. If he says you go to jail, you go to jail.

Dude, I'm not trying to argue the point here. I was just making what I thought was a valid observation. I've already gone along with it in the story so there's really nothing to argue.

*shrug* You claimed they couldnt arrest her. I'm not actually involved in the story, so I don't care either way - I'm just throwing in that you are looking at this from a very western-democracitic-society POV; which might not be helpful within an entity like the Jade Empire.

I don't think Dark is arguing, just pointing out another observation. But yes, it is in the past now.

Truth be told Felicity's not very good at diplomacy, either. Though, she is much, much better at keeping her cool. We should think of some reason to send Felicity there too, she also has a knack for inadvertently starting trouble buuut at least she's a bit more polite about it.

Speaking of which, though, there are a couple of characters I have that I think should visit the JE. Hirai Molariou was trained in their swordsmanship, though she knows little of where it came from. I could send her there along with Caitlyn as part of a discovering your roots type thing even though her family is deeply rooted in the Republic, but her trainer had always been kind of a surrogate father to her so it still counts. ;)

Edit:

Ooh, even better! Put Keira and Caitlyn in a room together, those hotheads could probably generate enough heat to power the sun. :P

I'm interested in the little mouse character. He's very engaging, and I like the speech patterns.

Whoa wait a minute, your making her use a sword? :raisedbrow: Isn't there some honor bound rule about that? A samurai wouldn't march into battle or a duel with someone Else's sword and neither would a Jedi. That's about the only thing they have in common, the sword is part of who they are. I think the Sai'mrai or whatever would understand that. Besides, the weight is all off and it will take longer than a couple of days for her to get acclimated to the sword. You'd be putting Keira at a disadvantage, which would be disgraceful to her, I think.

Perhaps you're right but a Lightsaber is a non traditional weapon. You have to fight a duel with the weapon used by the culture. ALSO if you read the comics... Jedi are still pretty kick ass with a sword. The one dude in Dark time wiped out like a whole planet that had a Sword Law (as long as you used a sword you could do whatever) and he only had a sword and he was going up against some pretty tough hombres

A lightsaber is a traditional weapon, technically. Maybe not in the Jade Empire but for a Jedi it definitely is. Keira would want to fight with her saber in the same way a samurai would want to fight with his sword.

Alliera favors a songsteel sword, so Keira using a lightsabre wouldn't be an issue.

I know I said we were going to tie but as I started to write that post I had a sudden inspiration that seemed surprisingly in character for her. Someone as defiant as Keira actually would, I think, refuse to fight when she was being made to against her will. ;)

That's probably about as close to an apology as you're going to get. I hope hara kiri is still a thing in the Jade Empire, this might earn her at least some respect... I hope. :P

That's not how seppuku works, Mandalore. Killing herself allows her to die with her honor intact. If anything it absolves her honor along with her brother's and the Emperor's. Someone raised in a samurai community would know that, so you might consider editing your post a bit.

Not that Keira knows any of this, though, she's just reacting to the situation. Holding herself hostage to change the Emperor's mind, though I am fairly certain she'll actually go through with it if he refuses so Beorht has a fifty fifty chance of killing her, right now. :P

You know, come to think of it all of my characters with the exception of Hirai and Faye would have refused to fight and Caitlyn's rebuttal would probably be as heated as Keira's.

Hmm, now I kind of want to put someone else in the same situation and see how they react. :P

I have a question, how old is Keira away? There's no birth date listed on her wiki.
