in the case on the MK I and MK II, yeah. The changes between the ships weren't that drastic. But to turn either of those into a MK III or any of those to a MK IV... I think would cost more then building a new one and likely take longer as well. To much structure would need to be changed or modified, especially for the MK IV. The engine lay out... Even though the gravity well is smaller its still a large piece of equipment...

As someone who's actually refitted a few Star Destroyers IRL, it may or may not cost more, depending on the circumstance. If you need more ISDs in the first place, it may be cheaper to build a brand new ISD since then you'd keep the old one for other duties. Plus, refitting an old one would leave you with lots of waste. However, if you are planning on just decommissioning the old one, then refitting it may not be a bad idea, if it's practical. On the other hand, you could build a new one, decommission the old one and sell it for scrap to recoup some money.

Or maybe more interesting, sell the stripped ISD's without weapons or major components to individual worlds who want a system defense force.. I'd be interested in that sort of story line..

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. That's certainly another option.

Balsa, small question...When did you refit ISDs in real life?

Mind you, I didn't actually do the hands-on work, but I went over the schematics and signed off on everything. It was a few years back. We refitted a couple of vessels but ordered new ones to replace some that weren't economical to refit.

Yeah you sold me a bunch of shavvit parts barely held together with carbon-nanotubules and signed off on some third-hand contractor nonsense that left all our gravity generators sticking everything to the rear walls, and in the fine print it was dubbed a "non-traditional gravity training area" that encompassed the entire ship! Do you remember what happened when I tried to use that fleet to turn Jupiter into a second sun a'la plan Clarke? DO YOU BALSA?!

Uh, my wife occasionally reads over my shoulder, so don't let her know that I talk about her that way.
