A somewhat irrelevant question

Post by Xalsin » Mon Apr 13, 2009 9:15 pm

Just curious, mostly, about the 200 post limit for threads... Why?

Now I know back in the old Sony SWG days, that was instituted by the official mods there to keep threads from.... Okay, I don't actually know why they did it. But I'm wondering why we continued it. Is it mostly a tradition thing? I mean, I've seen forums that use this same PhPBB thing that let their threads go on and on and have no problems, so I wonder why we do it here.

Again, an irrelevant question. One way or another, it hardly matters.

Just tradition, as far as I'm aware. I only do it to threads I'm a part of, or when someone asks me to on another thread.

As I understand it (I wasn't around for this, so I don't know firsthand), there was a technical reason for it originally (some part of the Sony forum software). The reason I tell myself these days, though, is to make it easier to navigate inside the thread. If the thread is limited to 5 pages, you can click on any one of them from the board list; with 6, you only miss out on a couple. If you go to the thread itself, they're all laid out there, but I doubt they would be if you got up to ten or twelve or twenty. So that's why I'm still happy to do it. :D

Yeah, it is easier to navigate, that much is true. I just figured now we did it for tradition with that as a secondary reason.

Yep. Tradition first, easy of navigability second.

It doesn't need to be done as far as I know, but the above reasons are why we still do it.

It was originally done because of a risk of the data being corrupted. Nowadays, it's purely tradition (and ease of navigation), as the data wouldn't be corrupted even if threads had 100 pages ;)

The orignal reason was a flaw in the orignal forum software SOE used to create the orignal SWG forums, when any thread broke the 200 post mark it ran the risk of crashing the whole board so the Mods there just started locking threads at 200, eventually we as the densians of the boards just started creating new parts at the 200 mark without prompting hence the tradition.

This whole post was just for reduency's sake...
